As we go through our daily activities, our muscles tend to accumulate tension and knots that cause discomfort and pain. To release this tension and improve your overall health, deep tissue massage is an excellent option.
At Got Knots Massage Therapy clinic in Edmonton, we offer expert deep tissue massage services that help alleviate chronic pain issues. Our team of licensed therapists has years of experience in providing effective treatments for various conditions.
What Is Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic technique that involves applying firm pressure to the deeper layers of muscles, fascia (the connective tissue surrounding the muscles), and other soft tissues. It aims to break down adhesions (bands of painful or rigid tissues) in your body’s muscle fibers caused by stress or injury.
Unlike Swedish massage, which uses lighter strokes on the surface level of muscles, deep tissue therapy targets specific areas with more intensive pressure. This technique requires advanced training from certified professionals who can perform it correctly without causing any harm.
How Does It Work?
The therapist will use their fingers, knuckles, elbows or specialized tools like wooden rollers to apply slow but intense pressure on tight spots known as “knots.” As they work on these knots with friction movements across the grain of your muscle fiber direction; it helps break up scarred tissues while reducing inflammation around them.
(Now you know why we called our massage therapy business “Got Knots”)
This process of deeply kneading your muscles may be uncomfortable initially but should not be unbearable at any point during treatment. Our therapist will ask you about your pain tolerance levels before starting so they can adjust accordingly if needed.

What’s the best thing to do after a deep tissue massage?
There are a couple of things that we suggest you do after a deep tissue massage. Drink water, lots of water. Even though you were not physically exercising, your muscles have had a bit of a workout, so making sure that you are well hydrated will decrease the amount of post treatment tenderness you will feel, and help to eliminate any metabolic waste and toxins that are released from your muscles during the treatment. Also water is just good for your body.
What you should not do after massage?
After a deep tissue massage, you should not do out of your normal or strenuous exercise after massage. The exception would be a pre-event sports massage, as that type of massage is designed to warm up and prepare the tissue for the sport that you are competing in.
