Common Questions about Pregnancy Massage

Can I lay on my stomach for massage while pregnant?

Pregnancy or prenatal massage can be done using a massage table that has a cut-out hammock to support the abdomen or there are special pillows that are designed with a space for your abdomen and breasts.

Both of these adaptations would allow you to lay face down during your treatment depending on how far along you are or how big you are, these options may not be comfortable or safe for you. If that is the case, your massage would be done in a side-lying position.

At Got Knots Massage, our massage therapists use prenatal pillows or side lying position.

At Around 20 weeks, when you are lying your back you will be in a semi-reclined position as opposed to flat on your back and your right hip will have a small bolster under it to shift the weight off the uterus and baby off the inferior vena cava (a large vein that carries blood from the torso and lower body to the right side of the heart).

What side should a pregnant woman lay on during a massage?

During a massage, a pregnant woman may lie on both sides of her body, with a preference towards the left side. As the pregnancy progresses, she may need to adjust her position to find a comfortable spot, but typically, she is not in any one position for more than 20 minutes.

If at any point during the massage, if you feel uncomfortable, dizzy, faint, or short of breath, you should inform your therapist immediately. This will allow her to change position and continue the massage in a safe and comfortable manner. The therapist will work with the woman to ensure that she is always comfortable and relaxed during the massage, as her well-being is of utmost importance.

There are a LOT of questions about receiving massage when pregnant. We’ll try to answer them all to your satisfaction. You may also want to know the answer to the question Can You Receive a Deep Tissue Massage When Pregnant as well, for example.
